Proposed human rights body hailed

It said in a statement on Tuesday that the initiative was an important step that could contribute towards the enhancement of human rights in the country. It would also assist in Zimbabwe’s compliance with its regional and international human rights obligations. “Consequently, the UNCT remains committed and has pledged that it will provide the needed support it can, technical or otherwise, for the establishment of such an independent human rights body” the body said. “We are also confident that the Government of Zimbabwe’s commitment to the establishment of a National Human Rights Commission will be carried out through a process of consultation with all relevant stakeholders.” The Sunday Mail of March 26, 2006 reported the explicit intention of the Government to establish a National Human Rights Commission for Zimbabwe. According to the report, the Commission, once created, is to be invested with “a mandate to receive, investigate and redress any complaints relating to human rights.” ‘
