MISA Namibia elects new board of governors
Only one member of the previous board, treasurer Christof Maletsky, stood for re-election. Maletsky was elected as the new chairperson of Misa Namibia with New Era senior reporter Surihe Gaomas as his deputy.
One Africa Television’s news editor, Rene L’tter, was elected treasurer. Katutura Community (KCR) Radio’s new station manager Sandra Williams, and senior producer at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Gladwin Groenewaldt were elected as additional members of the new governing council.
The meeting also approved a constitutional change that allows the past chairperson of the NGC to stay on in an ex-officio capacity for a year. The amendment was approved at the 2003 Misa regional annual general meeting to ensure continuity. In Namibia’s case, Robin Tyson, former chairperson, will attend board meetings for another year in an ex-officio capacity.
Misa’s new chairperson Maletsky thanked the outgoing board for their hard work in bringing about several changes at the organisation which steered Misa Namibia in the right direction and promised that the new NGC would take the organisation to new heights.
He said the new board would concentrate on making the organisation more visible among its members and to intensify campaigns for freedom of expression.
The new board will be introduced to the public at a press briefing later this week.
