Channel O African Music Video Awards back with vigour
The awards will be staged at the Gallagher Estate and broadcast a week later on Channel O.
Nominees who underwent a stringent selection process will be announced during the first week of August. Unlike most award shows where a panel of judges chooses the winners, the Channel O African Music Video Award winners are decided by Channel O viewers.
The Channel O African Music Video Awards are all about celebrating the successes of our music industry.
“We are looking forward to bringing musicians from across the continent together for a night of great entertainment and recognition.
“It’s all about paying tribute to our world class artists, producers and directors and allowing them to publicly take ownership of their achievement,” says Yolisa Phahle, Channel O’s general manager.
Viewers will be able to vote for the winner in the different categories from mid August until early October. Voting will be via telephone, sms and the Channel O website.
A vibrant and colourful line up is scheduled for the prestigious event, with artists from all over Africa, including the host nation South Africa, billed to perform.
Last year saw the legendary Hugh Masekela performing along side hip hop artistes Prokid and Proverb, the talented Thandiswa Mazwai and Kwaito’s kingpin Arthur among others.
Winners at last year’s show included 2 Face Idibia from Nigeria who scooped the coveted Best Male and Best African West Categories for his smash hit African Queen while the Angolan group SSP won in the Best Director Category.
Thandiswa Mazwai won the Best Female award for Lahlu’mlenze and Hugh Masekela was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for his contribution in drug rehabilitation for artists.
The Channel O African Music Video Awards stand out from anything else in the continent in that the awards are specific to music videos and are purely viewer’s choice awards.
This year’s qualifying music videos must be produced between January 2005 and May 2006 and have also received airplay on Channel O, which is available continent-wide on DStv.
