Guide to the music of Tanzania
Muziki was dansi is a music popularized by Tanzanian dance bands in the 1970s and can be heard on this CD by Mlimani Park Orchestra’s “Rehema” or through the jazz sounds of tracks like “Tambiko” by the Vijana Jazz Band and “Piga Ua” by the Ottu Jazz Band. Bongo flava, a grassroots hip hop style that originated in Tanzania, is represented by the sound of Masai hip hop artists X Plastaz and their song “Dunia Dudumizi”, as well as female Tanzanian hip hop artist Dataz and her song Mume Wa Mtu”. Taatab music originated on Tanzania’a coast and infuses African, Arab, and Indian music styles. Tracks like Ikhwani Safaa Music Club’s “Vingarvyo” or Mohammed Issa Matona’s “Msumeno”.
