Isuzu reveals Fortuner rival
Toyota’s Fortuner outsells the Chevrolet Trailblazer by two to one in South Africa.
Perhaps it would serve the interest of General Motors better to market its Fortuner rival with a slightly more traditional 4×4 nameplate. Like Isuzu.
Options? Well, what about this: the Isuzu MU-X. Beyond the rather unfortunate naming convention, it’s a current generation KB with five doors, which yes: means that it is in fact a Trailblazer with the correct badging, if you consider the engineering and engines were always Isuzu’s doing.
So you get that same 130kW/380Nm three-litre D-Teq engine, five speed transmissions (Isuzu manual or an automatic Aisin), and 230mm of ground clearance. Unfortunately, like the Trailblazer, you get traction control instead of a proper mechanical rear differential lock, but there is an improvement over the Chevrolet as you gain KB cabin bits instead of that odds-and-ends Trailblazer cabin architecture and detailing.
Isuzu MU-X makes its public debut at the Tokyo auto show later this month, but will it come to South Africa? We wonder: potential success story or a contemporary Frontier? That depends entirely on which brand GM thinks has more resonance locally: Chevrolet or Isuzu… – TopGear SA
