Education slams false message on reopening
WINDHOEK– Public schools will reopen for the second trimester of this academic year on 30 May and not on 11 June as indicated in a false message circulating on social media.
ATuesday statement from the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MEAC) said the message doing rounds on WhatssApp falsely quotes the respective minister, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa saying the reopening of schools after the current holiday has been postponed to June for government to cut costs.
MEAC chief public relations, officer Johanna Absalom condemned the message as false and confusing to parents and learners, saying the stipulated academic year shall remain as is.
“We understand the panic and confusion that this message has caused and would like to assure all learners, parents, guardians, teachers and all our stakeholders that the content is false and unfounded.”
Absalom said hostels for boarding learners will resume on 29 May 2017 as per approved 2017 school calendar, while hostel staff should report for duty on 26 May 2017.
“The MEAC Act (2) of 2017 referred to in the text is fictional and the ministry is guided by the Education Act 16 of 2001,” said Absalom to stress that the message is not legitimate.
She said the MEAC’s web address is not www.edu.com.na as stated in the false message. The correct web address of the MEAC official website is www.moe.gov.na. – (NAMPA)
