Breaking news: Malawi independence celebrations gone bad, 8 feared dead, 45 injured during stampede at Bingu Stadium
Eight people are said to have died while almost 50 are feared to be injured in a stampede that has happened at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Reports that Malawi24 is monitoring indicate that the stampede happened when people were trying to gain access into the stadium for independence celebrations.
According to the reports, in an attempt to gain entry into the stadium, there was pushing and shoving which saw some people being stepped on by the mob leading to deaths and injury.
An eyewitness told Malawi24 that organizers opened the gates when a lot of people had already arrived at the stadium hence causing the the stampede.
“I passed by the stadium around 6:30 AM and there were a lot of people while others were on their way. Late opening of the stadium caused the stampede.
“People responsible should be fired. how could the organizers open only two gates at the stadium on this great occasion,” said the eyewitness.
As this is a developing story, Malawi24 is following it up and will keep you updated. (Source: Malawi 24)
