ECM condemns killing of suspected blood suckers
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has expressed concern over the barbaric killings of people suspected of being or working with blood suckers.
In a statement, ECM notes that many theories have been advanced regarding the issue of blood sucking which have been influenced by cultural beliefs, superstition and myths.
However the body is more concerned about the violence that has resulted from the rumours.
So far nine people have been killed in the Southern Region in connection with the blood sucking saga.
“ECM does not want to join the bandwagon of rumour mongers or those speculating about the validity of these claims. However, the truth of the matter is that these sad incidents have resulted in merciless killings of innocent people in the affected districts,” reads the statement.
The ECM has asked government to urgently investigate the matter in order to establish the truth about the issue of blood sucking and has commended the Malawi leader Peter Mutharika for providing leadership.
“ECM calls upon the Police to be professional when discharging their duties in order to guarantee the security of Malawians in the affected areas.
They must investigate all acts of violence associated with this issue of blood sucking. Suspects must be arrested and perpetrators of violence must be prosecuted according to the law,” pleads ECM.
ECM has further called upon all citizens of this country especially those living in the affected areas to act responsibly and lawfully even in times or situations of desperations like these and it has called upon all religious leaders to act swiftly and provide spiritual hope and comfort to their followers especially those in desperate conditions.
Currently, Malawi has been compromised with the stories of blood sucking especially in the southern districts of Mulanje, Phalombe, Chiradzulu, Blantyre, Zomba and Thyolo.
So far 140 people have been nabbed in connection with the killing of people suspected to be blood suckers or for damaging property of innocent people accused of working with blood suckers-Malawi 24
