Nashandi was crowned at a glamorous event where 10 finalists were aiming for the overall prize. “I was very positive,” said Anna, shedding tears of joy. Laurencia Endjala (23), a cabin attendant with Air Namibia, was crowned first princess, while Rebeka Munana (20) who is a University of Namibia student, was crowned second princess. The public’s favourite contestant was Defney Tshabalala, won the prize of Miss Photogenic and Miss Personality went to Lizane van Wyk and Laurencia Endjala, respectively. The race to find Namibia’s most beautiful girl ended on a high note at the Windhoek Country Club and Namibia’s High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Monica Nashandi, mother to the newly crowned Miss Namibia was ecstatic. “I am a very proud mother. She had lots of potential and this is just one of her many prizes to put on her list of achievements. I don’t know if I will be able to drive my car home tonight because of all the excitement.” Defney Shabalala who was everybody’s favourite laughed herself out of the competition after the judges visibly had numerous headaches in finding the right ambassador. She had all the best answers but laughed too much to convince the judges to give full scores to Anna. The most difficult question put to her was to define women in one sentence. Her response, which came in seconds set the place alive as she gave the best answer to many that was attending as well as those watching television at home. Gift Gwe, a South African Idols’ 2005 runner-up, performed during the pageant, while local artists like Tiro Moshosho, Lydia and Catty-Catt kept the audience on their feet. The eight judges included among others Adele Basson, Miss Namibia 2004; Fenni Angukku, First Princess, Miss Namibia 2004, and Anita Tschirpig, Assistant General Manager of Sossusvlei Lodge. Miss Namibia 2005 was Leefa Shikwa, but she did not attend the pageant finals after being stripped of her title recently following revelations that she was married before her crowning in 2005. The event one of the premier events on the Namibian social calendar was packed to the brim with enthusiasts putting the best of winter wear on to grace the occasion. The two presenters Barbara Kahatjipara and South African radio DJ and television presenter Saami Sabati wasted no time to introduce the girls with truly gorgeous wears designed by Melanie Harteveld Becker that served as a front act to the main event.
