Namibia, Russia trade volumes unimpressive

WINDHOEK, 25 MAY (NAMPA) – Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy of the Russian Federation, Yury Trutnev has described trade volumes between Namibia and Russia at US.dollars 24 million in 2016 as “unimpressive”.
“The volume halved compared to 2015. The figure is unimpressive for our two countries,” he said after a closed-door meeting with President Hage Geingob at Statehouse on Wednesday.
Trutnev, who also serves as deputy prime minister, said although the trade volume has dropped, the two countries are doing well in other areas of cooperation.
“Russia increased their quota for Namibian students. The cooperation for military technical field is also developing and some good progress was made in the field of tourism.”
Trutnev said it would be beneficial to expand and explore other fields such as mining, energy and agriculture.
“If Namibia is interested in producing nuclear energy, Russia is number one in the world when it comes to nuclear energy, so that is one area of interest Namibia should look at,” he recommended.
Geingob welcomed the concept of Russia and Namibia exploring other fields of trade and cooperation, saying Namibia has potential in nuclear energy.
“We are one of the richest in uranium, which we do not eat. We will look for somebody who needs it more and add economic value to it and use it,” the President noted.
Geingob also invited investors interested in Namibia’s uranium to come, explore and discuss cooperation with others involved in uranium mining.
“Government will be willing to facilitate. We will be willing to see how we can also benefit from that. So therefore, the doors are open.” -(NAMPA)
