ZANU-PF Youth League wants First Lady appointed VP, Mnangagwa expelled
HARARE – The ZANU-PF Youth League on Monday said First Lady Grace Mugabe must be appointed Vice President to replace incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa who is on the verge of expulsion from the party, accused of fanning factionalism and plotting to remove President Robert Mugabe from office.
Already, four of the party’s 10 provinces have thrown their weight behind the expulsion of VP Mnangagwa and his backers.
ZANU-PF Youth League secretary Kudzanai Chipanga told the media that they were fully behind calls by the First Lady for the removal of VP Mnangagwa, going further to say Dr Mugabe should be appointed in his place.
“We need someone who is acceptable and with unquestionable loyalty to the party and its principal, the President R.G Mugabe and more importantly one without ambitions to work against the president,” he said.
“The only person possessing such qualities is the leader of the Women’s League none other than Her Excellency, Dr Amai Grace Mugabe.”
Chipanga said the position that VP Mnangagwa occupies belonged to the party Women’s League and the youth league, while backing the First Lady to take over, would stand guided “on the way forward regarding their preferred candidate”.
VP Mnangagwa is alleged to front a faction, named Lacoste, that has been accused of plotting to remove President Mugabe from power as the succession battle in the party refuses to die.
Former Vice President, Joice Mujuru was also fired from ZANU-PF over three years ago over allegations of plotting to remove President Mugabe from power.
With ZANU-PF set to hold an extraordinary congress next month, it is expected that President Mugabe will name a new presidium for the ruling party, amid indications that VP Mnangagwa would be dropped, that is if he would still be in that position by that time. – New Ziana.
